Parenting skill

Ohh! my child is not eating  food what to do? Give them mobile..its  so easy option

Is your child really enjoying the food, tastes, textures etc.?

Does your child understand that his/her stomach is full? Or you only decide his /her hunger?

But here another question is, how much and how many times have you fed him/her in a day?

Really your child is feeling hungry?

Here I have taken only few examples of your child’s activity which is hunger or eating habits.

Just like that your child does many activities in a day , according to his/her activities you can ask different questions to yourself and try to get insight about their behavior.

Me, being the psychologist, many parents use to come to me with their children with different complaints?

 For example:-

Why my child is so stubborn?                                                                     He is not at all listening to us.

Why does he do binge eating?                                                                    He is not at all sitting on one place.

He throws the things.                                                                                     Not studying.

Likewise many more complaints.

So, parents come to me with their own different  labeling or tagging for their child. Every time I ask them the simple question like what do you do when they show any particular behavior. Like, what was the incident that child behave differently or not your way?

Next is…

What was their unaccepted behavior?                                                    What was the parent’s reaction?

So for that I got the different answers according to their experiences. I have heard that all incidents were so common but their consequences  are totally different.

For example, go through below Incidents –

Incidents  :- Child wants chocolates.

Child’s behavior:-He shows the tantrum like sleeping on floor/throwing things whatever they have /pulling hair/self harming etc.

Parents Action/Reaction:-

 1)  Give the things whatever they want

 2) Saying sorry to others for their child’s behavior because they feel  awkward / embarrassed .

 3) Sometimes parents slap or yell in front of others.

 4) Sometimes over react with anger /more pamper.

So in above example, parent was not trying to understand or explain the situation to child instead they directly show their own created alternate ways/reactions to handle the situation.

Here are some tips to improve parenting skills:-

  1. Be consistent with your reaction towards child’s behavior :- Sometimes as parent they just change their reaction differ for same child’s behavior. You have to be consistent for your child’s behavior.Dont change your views or action according to child’s requirement as well yours.
  2. Practice active listening with your child  :- As a parent you need to listen your child very carefully and understand his/her needs.
  3. Show love and affection daily :- Give your affection, your warm touch to your child for e.g give him kisses, hugs and ask them about their day and show your concerns.
  4. Avoid yelling, shaming, and labeling :- Yelling or labeling makes child more down . Low self esteem and self confidence creates more self doubt . And child will give up on any situation easily.
  5. Let your child fail :- Does not matter if your child gets fail in any situation, teach them how to manage the failure. So later they know the managing it rather quiet it.
  6. Acknowledge and validate their feelings :- Acknowledge is always good gesture. If your child come to you and express their feelings please validate  and try to understand it and then explain ir why they feel some particular way or validate it.
  7. Separate the action from the child (a behavior is bad; a child isn’t bad) :- Be wise with your words…Your child behavior makes him or her bad not he himself bad.

8) Education and learning:-Teaching children to be lifelong learners begins at home. This includes valuing education, modeling learning, and providing enrichment opportunities for your child.

“Many believe parenting is about controlling children’s behavior and training them to act like adults. I believe that parenting is about controlling my own behavior and acting like an adult myself. Children learn what they live and live what they learn.” – L.R. Knost
